What EPDM is
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane, usually black, supplied in large sheets. On a garage or an extension, one sheet often covers the whole roof, bonded to the deck with adhesive and finished with edge trims. No flame is used, which matters on a roof over a kitchen or next to a timber wall.
- For: no seams on most house roofs, flexible in frost and heat, no flame, quick to lay.
- Against: black only on most systems; it can be punctured by sharp objects; it isn't meant to be walked on as a terrace without protection.
- Details matter most: the trims, the corners and where it turns up the wall. That's where EPDM roofs fail.
