The usual repairs
- Split seams or laps in felt or single-ply, re-sealed or patched over.
- Blisters in felt: cut, dried, re-bonded and patched.
- Flashings where the roof meets a wall: the lead or the felt upstand pulled away, re-dressed and sealed.
- Outlets: blocked or leaking where the water leaves the roof.
- Cracks in GRP, often at the trims or over a joint in the deck, ground out and re-laminated.
- Punctures in EPDM, patched with the maker's own repair tape and primer.

When a repair won't hold
- The deck is soft underfoot: the boards are wet or rotten, and a patch on top seals the water in.
- The felt is cracked and crazed all over, not in one place.
- Leaks in several places at once.
- The same spot has been patched before and leaks again.

- Where the water shows inside, and how far that is from the walls.
- Whether it leaks in every shower, only in heavy rain, or only in wind-driven rain.
- The material if you know it, and roughly when the roof was last done.
- Photos of the roof from a window, and of the stain inside.

A temporary fix, yes: a tarp or an emergency patch. A proper repair needs a dry surface, so it waits for a dry spell.
How long does a flat roof repair last?
As long as the rest of the roof, if the fault was a single one and the roof around it is sound. On an old felt roof, one repair is often followed by another.
Can I repair a flat roof myself?
Small EPDM patches and clearing an outlet, many people do. Torch-on felt uses an open flame on a roof: leave that to a roofer insured for hot work.
